Elemental Magnesium: The Number That Actually Matters on Labels

Magnesium supplement labels can be confusing because the total mg listed is usually the weight of the entire compound, not the magnesium itself. A "500 mg magnesium citrate" supplement contains far less than 500 mg of actual magnesium. The elemental magnesium is what matters for dosing.

This is why magnesium oxide appears to offer a lot of magnesium per pill — its elemental percentage is high at 60%. But since only 4% of that is absorbed, the effective elemental magnesium from 500 mg of oxide is approximately 12 mg. The same 500 mg of glycinate delivers 70 mg at 80% absorption — nearly 6 times more usable magnesium.
